Meet the people behind the brand...Sewasew.
The Founding
Sewasew Design was founded in 2007 by a passionate young mom who was in love with the art of fashion and design. Her name is Sewasew Hailu and nothing was going to stop her from chasing her passion and her dreams! She started with one sewing machine in the backyard of her house and grew to be named one of the top 10 fashion designers in Ethiopia. She toured around the world showcasing traditional Ethiopian apparel and promoting Ethiopian crafts.
The Challenge
In 2020, Sewasew Design reemerged after a four-year hiatus. With a mere 5,000 birr in the bank and a 200,000-birr debt compounded by the pandemic, the brand faced formidable challenges. But a tenacious mother-son duo was determined to resurrect it. Known for her modern expressions of traditional Ethiopian designs, Sewasew had experienced the harsh reality of losing everything, including her business. Her 24-year-old son Ablane, an entrepreneur and now the brand's CEO, had a passion for business. Fueled by the hardships his mother endured, he studied business to fulfill his dream of resurrecting her venture.
The Revival
United by an ambitious vision, the duo embarked on a mission to redefine Sewasew Design. They aimed to create a culturally-resonant Ethiopian clothing line that was functional and eliminated the need for custom measurements. Sewasew infused each design with the essence of Ethiopian culture, while Ablane navigated the business landscape. Against all odds, Sewasew Design emerged as a symbol of resilience, passion, and the triumph of dreams. Sewasew's story became a beacon of resilience, inspiring women facing similar challenges. This revival not only signaled the renaissance of a once-struggling brand but also showcased the indomitable spirit of those who dared to dream amidst adversity.
